Smart homes in the making
Over the years there have been a large amount of improvements in the world of elderly assistance through telecare alarm systems. Call4Care is a South African company that aims to stay at the forefront of leading technology in the industry which will allow people to live independently for longer, while enjoying increased safety in moments of need.
One of the next major developments in the world of telecare is smart houses. Smart house technology will see homes fitted with state-of-the-art passive sensors which will be able to relay the health and well-being of the person living in the home on to a secure website, which can then be monitored by a relative or caregiver.
Dr Jim Briggs of the University of Portsmouth is currently conducting studies for information on general living to assist with creating the ‘brains’ behind the new technology according to the Daily Mail.
After receiving a grant, the British team are creating a ‘living laboratory’ where they can gather the information that they need. The sensor will need to judge the difference between someone falling over and being injured or someone who is just taking a quick nap. The team is also working with scientists from the University of Sussex where sensors that can read someone’s heartbeat have been created.
“People want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible and installing sensors is about helping them do that while also reassuring their families that Mum or Dad is okay,” Dr Briggs told the Daily Mail.
“The elderly population is growing and there is a need to care for increasing numbers with less money.
“This technology will appeal to carers who want the reassurance of being able to logon to a secure site and check that the elderly person’s daily routine is unchanged.
“It is incredibly reassuring for family members to see an elderly relative is safe and well.”
