Rebecca suffered from daily blackouts and found out about these alarm systems through her elderly grandmother, who uses a pendant to continue living independently while enjoying increased home health care and safety.
While getting her son, Finley, ready for school Rebecca suffered another blackout, but this time she tumbled down the stairs and was left unconscious.
Using the telecare monitor, Finley contacted an operator and informed them of the situation. The young boy said that his mother had gone “bump bump” down the stairs and that she was fast asleep. The operator sent an ambulance to the house and also contacted Rebecca’s mother-in-law to inform her about the incident.
“I don’t get any warning when I have a black-out. The first I knew about it was when I woke up surrounded by paramedics,” said Rebecca.
“Finley had seen it all happen, and had told the Careline operator what had happened and that I needed help. They then called my mother-in-law and an ambulance, and I was eventually taken to Morriston Hospital. Luckily, the worst injury I suffered was carpet burn, but it was a frightening experience.”
Regarding another incident, Rebecca added: “We’d only had the sensors fitted for a day before I blacked out whilst frying onions. The sensor alarm on my waist was triggered and help was called. It was lucky, because my food had started burning in the pan, and who knows what could have happened.
“It’s very reassuring to know that there’s always someone on the other end of the monitor who can call for help within seconds.”
